Wherever possible, nails should not be shortened with a single cut. You should shorten the nail using a number of smaller cuts. It is also possible to use a nail file to shorten nails.

If a nail is shortened in one cut, this frequently lifts up the nail matrix (where the nail forms). This can cause the nail to move slightly out of the nail bed and loosen.

Nails should not be cut too far down. The nail plate should cover the tip of the toe.

Ideally, nails should be cut by an expert in connection with thorough foot care. An expert can give you individual advice and guidance.
